This is a recording of my father, David Edward Smith, playing the theme from Carmen (Horowitz variations). My father listened to Horowitz's recording and transcribed the notes by ear. His notes/music are available here: http://www.drslawfirm.com/carmen.pdf
jerryknuck - alas, david edward smith died. i've hoped to correspond more with the owner of this channel to get his dad better known, but he fades in and out of contact. i'm still interested. :)

Excellent. Thank you for posting this and especially for posting your father's transcription. He definitely knows what he's doing musically.
It's interesting to hear a performance based on another performance rather than the performer's interpretation of written music. Although it may not contain as much originality on the part of the performer, nuances do appear which may otherwise be buried in the musical notation.

This is an amazing performance - despite the poor recording quality, it's the only performance of Carmen variations that I've heard that equals the excitement of the Horowitz version. I hear some differences in the two arrangements, so this version is not identical to Horowitz's, but no less virtuosic and impressive. Is your father still alive? Still performing?
