Sarcoidosis—what's that?

It's an immune system disorder that affects tens of thousands of Americans. Symptoms include a persistent cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, night sweats, weight loss, small red bumps on the face, arms or buttocks, red, watery eyes, and arthritis in the ankles, elbows, wrists and hands, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most cases are mild, but severe cases can cause scarring in the lungs, a complication that occurs in 20 to 25 percent of patients.

What causes it?

Typically, our bodies fight perceived threats with an inflammatory response. With sarcoidosis, this response becomes excessive and ends up producing small clumps of cells that can cluster throughout the body. Large clusters can interfere with the functioning of organs, most commonly the lungs (more than 90 percent of cases), the eyes and the skin. In addition to lung scarring, it can cause serious eye conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma, or aching and swelling in the legs accompanied by arthritis.

Who gets it?

This is primary an illness of adults in the 20- to 40-year-old range. African-Americans are more prone to the condition than whites (the incidence rate among blacks is 35.5 cases per 100,000; among whites it's 10.9 per 100,000). African-American women are twice as likely as African-American men to be struck with the illness.

Why do people get it?

It's not clear what causes sarcoidosis, though experts believe environmental contaminants can help trigger a genetic susceptibility. Studies have found a link between this condition and irritants such as tree pollen, insecticides and moldy environments.

Can it be cured?

Not currently. The most common treatment is Prednisone, a steroid that can have serious side effects. Occasionally, physicians prescribe drugs known as immune system suppressants (such as Plaquenil and Methotrexate). While sarcoidosis can be severe, less than 5 percent of patients die of it. In the vast majority of cases, symptoms are mild and disappear over time. Mac had the condition until it went into remission in 2005. About one-third of patients have an "unrelenting," progressive form of this illness that typically leads to organ impairment.

  • these people are so negative God can change anything even sarcoidosis.

  • shit i have the same effects but i think its lupus but im not sure

  • i luv the way they say his death was "related or complicated by sarcoidosis. ITS BULLSHIT, the illness which is labelled sarcoidosis is treated with large doses of steroids...... steroids MESS YOUR HEART and you get Heart Arrhythmia , thats irregular heart beat , and eventually a heart attack, , its happened to me! ...what the doctors should tell every steroid taker is to take POTTASIUM SUPPLEMENTS, because the steroids leaches pottasium them from your body which affects the heart.

  • My worst symptom was very painful lumps and bruises on my legs. I also had bloodshot eyes and inflammation in my lung tissue. Luckily, I was treated early and have recovered. I still bruise easily and painfully, but my lung x-rays are clear again.

  • Sarcoidosis, fibromyalgia, CFS, etc. can be beat...

    two words: MARSHALL PROTOCOL

    read about it on

    bacteriality . com

  • Do the Marshal Protocol! that is long term antiboitic therapy.

People with Sarc have accumulated way too many bacteria.Trouble is these bacteria are different , they have no cell walls and they are SO TINY, they hide in your own cells!they are called CWD bacteria .

The Medical community, are playing down the harm and the cure to SARC! just google Inflamation therapy, or the marshal protocol, people are being healed!

  • Cell wall deficient bacteria, cause sarcoidosis. They are also known as mycoplasma , L forms, mollucites, or nanobacteria, I even heard them refered to as somnatids.

They are so tiny and they have no cell wall so they find a cell,... YOUR CELLS. Now they have a perfect hiding place. Your doctor wont even know this. However, Trevor Marshall have devised "The Marshal Protocol" and treats patients with an antibiotic called minocycline to kill the bacteria.Others are using Bob Beck protocol.

  • Kataboom, I just read your entry . You are right! I was just diagnosed with this sarcoidosis and yes, she had the perfect opportunity to educate the public about this, little know disease. I am 55 and had pneumonia for the first time ever and had x-rays that signaled a further problem. It is a bit frightening at my age to know this is going on in my body. I have had Asthma since a child, so shortness of breath is not new to me. The other symptoms, however, are difficult to adjust to.

  • my mom has sarcoid she was in prison for 2 years she had to leave it untreated now its very sever she had to have a lung biopsy she also has asma. she also has conjestive heart falior im 13 years old i dont think she will live to see me graduate high school she just had a staff infection a couple of weeks ago. her sarcoid is on her heart and lungs mostly she has had a couple of tumers removered from her arms thankfully they where non cancerous

  • Not everyone with sarc has normal lungs, i know two members of family with sarc and they have problems with lungs and shortness of breath and non stop coughing, and due to taking steroid gain alot of weight.
