Friends of Ferdinand Inc. (FFI) is an Indianapolis-based 501(c)(3) organization run entirely by approximately 35 volunteers with a common goal: to foster and promote the humane treatment of Indiana's horses by providing options and educating individuals. "Retired from racing, not from life" is our slogan. FFI is a horse rescue organization that was established in 2005 in response to the fact that a common practice among racehorse owners and trainers desiring to divest themselves of injured or poorly performing horses was to send them to slaughter in exchange for a few hundred dollars. These horses are young, healthy and have viable options as athletes in other equine disciplines. Friends of Ferdinand Inc. (FFI) is dedicated to providing Indiana's horses that are not able to fulfill their intended purpose a chance at life through second careers or a dignified retirement. • I have a mare That has been diagnosed navicular but can't afford the operation to fix it. Can you tell me of clinics or vets that will help? Maybe a school for vets that would take her?

  • Try finding a journeyman farrier, or a farrier that specializes in corrective work. You may be able to manage your horse with help from a skilled professional.

  • not just TB's. I have an older arab off track, tho I have worked with TB's also. My arab is calm, smart, road safe, and hates the trails:) Started clicker trng some mths back and he is SOO clever. There are also QH's out there off-track. They all suffer the same, misunderstood after track life, & too much a "commodity" for the time & $. So much talent being lost, sad:( Keep up the wonderful work you do!

  • i go to barbM farms hahahha it was menchined at the end :)

  • i lease a retired racehorse that bowed his tendons too but he bowed both of them in his front legs

  • Thank you for saving him! Can't they convict horse slaughters? It's against the law..do you know why more isn't being done to save horses? My heart goes out to every abuse, neglected, starved horses, pomies...animals..period.

  • We have a retired racehorse, we put in tons of groundwork hours, and - she is very very high strung with lots of temperament - now we enjoy cross country rides, fast, wild, good, and safe. She has become a trusting and trusted companion, friend, mind-reader. Of course, we had our drawbacks, but now she is like a dream come true.

  • Sad story w/ a great ending.

  • What aw wonderful story!

  • This brought tears to my eyes. As the owner of an ex-racer I am so glad to hear when they get great homes. He is beautiful.

  • how is his hoof know, Like what can he do just flat or does he jump?

  • Horse racing is a sadistic, inhumane "sport" which should univerally be banned. It hurts the horses, and the jocks aswell (forced eating disorders).I know, because I had a relative who worked in the trade, but quit, cuz he couldn't live with himself.
