It's food mold. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol. It's a buffet for bacteria.

is it ok to use natural spring water instead of purified water?

I'm not an expert, I can not say for sure, but the thing is, if you use spring water or tap water it is not pure and things will start growing in your mixing medium! If you make the mix for just one use, it's ok, because you'll throw it away. If you use destilled water, then the mix will probably last a bit longer (but I guess still no more than a month).

If you do it for one use only, then it's ok, but keep in mind that things will start growing in there sooner or later :)

Omg, that's so gross! lol Thank you for posting this, because I had planned to make my own mixing medium in a large portion so I wouldn't have to keep remaking this. I'm so glad I saw this! lol I actually got goosebumps from seeing the growing stuff :X

Yeah, it's pretty bad! If I ever make home made mixing medium, I'll always do it fresh and through the rest away! Luckily glycerin isn't very expensive :)
