They aren't uncommon in Kaneohe Bay. In fact, for quite a while it was known as the world's largest breeding ground for hammerhead sharks. I lived there for three and a half years and spent a lot of time in that Bay. There was an old Japanese man who used to go fishing at night on the weekends in the Bay. He would sit off the end of the pier that stretched south from the Marine Corps Air Station (now Marine Corps Base). He would catch hammerheads all night on squid bait.

Silky sharks also regularly school.

The key word here is frequent! Many sharks school to feed and some to breed, however the hammerhead does this on a schedule unlike most other sharks. I do however find that many statements that science make as fact, exceptions have been found.
