This video was developed as a presentation for the 2011 Oceania Tobacco Control conference in Brisbane, Australia. it looks at the impact tobacco has had and continues to have on Māori. It follows historical events such as the introduction of tobacco through to the Māori Affairs Select Committee Inquiry into the Tobacco Industry.

Raureti Mokonuiarangi of Ngati Rangitihi (Te Arawa) was the editor of the Maori newspaper Te Korimako. He used his newspaper to express his concerns about the large number of Maori who smoked i.e. "There is one thing which this newspaper will always campaign for and that is for all men and women to give up smoking"

He wrote that this thing 'tobacco, hampers growth and kills people". He also added, "Opposing it will not be easy, there has to a good reason for
doing so. The best doctors of Europe, Asia and Africa have shown that that weed was not meant for human consumption. It has nothing healthy in it only death. Pākehā and Māori, perhaps you have heard it." (Te Korimako newspaper, September 1883). He composed a haka about smoking and the DVD opens with tamariki from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Mokopuna ki Newtown, Wellington who performed Mokonuiarangi's haka at the Quit Group's Matariki celebrations 2011.
