Excerpt from The Funeral Procession for Franz Schuhmeier
(Original title: Das Leichenbegängnis des Reichstagsabgeordneten Franz Schuhmeier)
1913, 6 minutes

From the DVD Vienna 1900: Pictures of a Metropolis

On February 11, 1913 the popular Social Democrat and Member of Parliament, Franz Schuhmeier was assassinated by a disturbed unemployed man. More than a hundred thousand people turned up for Schuhmeier's funeral, marching through the suburbs towards the Ottakring cemetery in the 16th district of Vienna, a stronghold of the Labor movement. The film shows scenes from this great manifestation of ordinary people and various civil organisations, a subject hardly ever touched upon by the newsreels. It is also unique in that it shows life outside the Imperial city centre, a subject the cinema would only rediscover after the end of the monarchy and World War I.
