This is a very short flash animation i made to better describe the Aquaponics concept to people back before i actually had a physical version made. Just very briefly describes some of the jobs that are happening.

Sorry for the lower quality it didn't seem to transfer very well from a flash animation to a video file.

  • what is the use of a slump? and are slumps really needed?

  • @qin02 Oh a Sump Tank? They are used alot of times if people have more then one grow bed or if filtering out different levels of water and require more then one at different elevations.

  • What trigger/mechanism are you using to release the water every so often to completely drain back to the fish?

  • @Rocky1765 An Auto-Siphon known as a Bell Siphon, made of 3", 2" and 1" PVC pipes cut to certain heights to allow a siphon action to kick on a few seconds after the water starts over flowing.

  • @Kudaimo I've tried to make my own bell siphon with the least cost...I used the upper part of a mineral water bottle which is bell-shaped..and the first try was a success. It was easy, as long as we understand the concept of water pressure and auto siphon..

  • @duckomega Agreed, I've heard of people using 2- Liter bottles as well. Honestly if you can find cheap tanks whether Stock tanks like I use, drum barrels or even bathtubs you could probably build an Ebb and Flow system for under $100 most of which would go into your pump and media.

  • but whats the costs of feeding the fish?

  • @andrewprzekwas You want to take care that you test the water for Ammonia and Nitrites (should be zero) and make sure the Nitrates don't go above 80 ppm because then your gonna risk the fish's life. That's the real key to striking that balance where the plants filter the water perfectly and use up everything and leave nothing harmful.

  • @andrewprzekwas If you put the tank under the bed or next to it out of direct light it should be ok. Black paper on the walls of the tank will also help keep light out. Fish live in water that's murky so they can go without much light they just need a day night cycle which your plants will be providing. The only thing I would watch out for is the same Nitrates and trace minerals that build up and are great for plants are also deadly to fish in higher levels.

  • only problem with this setup is that your light source will be relatively close to your fish aquarium water, which case, any light that is hitting the tank will create tons of algae

  • @Kudaimo sump.. sorry typo, i see, not completely necessary however it does help moving out the larger particularites. Need to be in differnet elevations to tank and bed.
