@mrright564 I know this comment is a year old but for anyone else who is interested this theme is a traditional Irish piece called Lament For Limerick or Limerick's Lamentation. Burwell built his score around it the same way he built his score around it the same way he used traditional hymns in True Grit. Apparently Gabriel Byrne suggested it to him.

@mrright564 It's an old Irish tune called Limerick's Lament. The lament is for the loss of the Jacobite Cause in 17th century.

I really love this score, but in my opinion it does not go with the movie very well. The score has a very hopeful and inspiring touch to it that the movie (which is still very good) lacks.
