I completely agree, and I would prefer marriage to be abolished (to be replaced with civil unions). If people or churches want to call their civil unions marriages, so be it. Unfortunately I doubt that is ever going to happen, and the quickest easiest solution seems to be to allow everyone to get married, then we can work on making marriages secular.

Marriage in the western world was actually secular until the Catholic church adopted it for the increase in revenue. Also, just because you may believe it is currently a religious institution says nothing about whether or not it ought to be a religious institution.
Getting rid of marriage and substituting civil unions would work, but a much more practical solution is just allowing any two consenting adults to get a marriage.

GGGG is a sadistic freak who sends death-threats to families just because they have a gay couple.
He should be in jail and/or a mental ward.

Someone has the guts to say it. I agree! Incest between consenting adults should be legal. I can never understand how someone could even contemplate having a sexual relationship with their sister or cousine and quite frankly it offends my sensibilities. But at the end of the day no ones rights are being violated and if we permit homosexuality for that very reason, we cant make an exception for something a little less popular
-
well I can only speak for myself, I don't want them calling it marriage. That shows a lack of respect and tolerance from the gay community. They pursuing the marriage angle is a stick in the eye, they want to force acceptance for their lifestyle. All I have to say is, go to the mddle east and push the same agenda with those religious zealots, see what the response is there.

Unfortunately civil unions aren't equivalent to marriages in the eyes of government. Heck, not every state even recognizes civil unions as legitimate. Once we get equal rights for homosexuals, then we can bicker about what we ought to call these unions.

@RollinLeonard #1, where are the first mentions of marriange in written (or even oral for that matter) history? Think hard, it goes back about 6500 yrs, that is a hint. Rollin, you did not put forth one fact in your arguement, no you just state "marriage predates religion" as if that is fact, with nothing to back it up, not one source, hillarious. hey, if buttpirates what to have a civil union, I give a flying flart, but they are obvisously not of any Abrahamic religion, so don't use the word.
-
@jacenb001 Wrong. Marriage predates religion. Not all religions care if gays marry. Many cultures aren't even religious. Your shitty religion should not dictate the lives of the the rest of us or oppress the minority.

I know this is ultra off topic here, but you're kind of adorable.

jesus was taken to the top of the worlds tallest mountian as said in the bible, and he was shown all the kingdoms of the world. This IS possible becuase the earth is flat.
Then fight for a law to change the meaning of civil unions to have all the rights of marriage, on the federal level so that states have to recognize it. Problem solved, then you take away the main arguement from the religos and you get the support of libertarians like me.

@jacenb001
Yes, that would solve the issue for me; though eventually one term would go obsolete just for shear redundancy.
I hate to be cynical, but I think this would get attacked anyways for the exact same reasons it is currently getting attacked. The heart of this issue is homophobia. It isn't about the institution of marriage, it's about gays being equivalent to straights. I doubt that is the case for you, but for a lot of conservatives against gay marriage it seems to be the case.
