I have got a Muay Thai background and I'm trying to adjust to more of a boxing style when when working combinations. I'm trying to work on using more angles and better footwork. Any experienced boxers out there got advice?

  • the main idea that u are missing is to punch using YOUR FEET! Try to experiment with that, you will be able to put more weight behind each of ur punch, and you will be able to unstiffen ur back, allowing you to throw faster and a smoother combinations

  • Question? i'm 5'11..160 pounds with a really long reach what should i work on? my dad and friends say im took stiff and stationary..but i have alot of power in my punches!!

  • @kendellp17 Sorry, I just now saw this. Comments aren't being updated on my profile. You probably do have a lot of power because of the increased leverage. Alot of guys think being stocky equates to power but not necessarily in striking. Lengthy fighters like Pavlik and Hearns had tremendous KO power and they look like stick figures. At your height and reach, you need to fight on the outside and take advantage of your reach.

  • @behemoth2299 I wouldn't know how to do that. I mean I know the motion for throwing the punches but it get's chaotic when in combinations or when I counter. Punching in Muay Thai is so different then boxing. I really need to re learn a lot of things.

  • i was stiff when I started so I tried to box like Rocky Marciano. I'm 6'0 and 190 and I have a very muscular upper body. Well, I decided not to box like rocky when my head was used as a speed bag by a faster fighter.

The key point of this story is dont ever limit yourself by letting your mind trick you into thinking your limited to one style. I started working on speed ever since, and trust me, speed is better than power. Get fast, beat the guy, THEN knock him out with the huge blow to thehead

  • @kendellp17 dont listen to behemoth dont punch with your feet punch from the hip and body

  • your hands are madd low... bring them back to your face... along with the other guy said generate your power from your feet, legs, and hips....

  • @strafer Practice a combination, for example, left straight, right straight, left hook, right hook. hit that combination as you normally would and start by getting familiar with the timing. then slowly start loosen up your shoulders as you throw the combination. your punches are faster now and they "snap" the bag 1 inch behind contact. just focus on landing each punch as swiftly and relax as you can.

next thing, you are adding your footwork to improve your timing and position to the bag!

  • bend your knees.more fluidity

  • @Onizuka26 I thought about it but there just fitness gym employees. They probably think kicking damages the bags more when in reality they don't unless you kick with shoes on. I haven't thrown a kick in years, so I may just try to convince them.

  • @johnnie160 They are designed for both not really great for either. Mainly made for incorporating punches in with leg kicks.

  • @johnnie160 They are designed for both not really for either. Banana bags are used in Muay Thai so mix in low kicks with the punches.

  • i really hate long bags like that! i suppose those one are actually designed for kicking. thats why they extend so low
