All right, I wasn't actually IN the Boston Engine Terminal, but I was on the Austin Street Bridge overlooking the facility. Several MBTA trains passed underneath me, and the front-loader at Boston Sand & Gravel pretended to be a locomotive while moving some gravel cars up for loading.

  • does this place have every train that comes out of north station going by it?

  • nice, firs time i saw action at the boston sand and gravel. maybe its just me but ive never seen a locomotive pick up or drop off hoppers there...

  • I haven't either. I'd assume they run REALLY late at night to avoid interfering with the heavy commuter rail traffic.

  • Nice Ty. Funny how they have the car #'s on the roof. What good does that do? Also, I like the loader moving the hoppers around, pretty cool to see sand and gravel still shipped around by rail!

  • Thanks! I don't know what the numbers are for, other than to aid rescue workers in case of emergency or something. But still...when else would you need to see car numbers from the sky?
