Rita "Syreeta" Wright began working at Motown in the mid-60's as a secretary. She eventually was signed to the label and recorded demos for such artists as Diana Ross. In 1967, her first single "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You" was released. It was a song written by Brian Holland and Ashford & Simpson and originally was intended for Diana Ross & The Supremes. Diana Ross would record the song in 1968 and again in 1971 for her "Surrender" album. In late 1969-1970, her name was changed to Syreeta and she was selected as the original replacement for Diana Ross in The Supremes because of their similarities in vocal style and physical appearance. However, Jean Terrell would be selected as the replacement in the group. In 1970, she would go on to marry Stevie Wonder. Even though their marriage lasted two years, their friendship continued and she helped write some of his biggest hits such as "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," "If You Really Love Me," and The Spinners' smash hit "It's A Shame." After their divorce, Stevie wrote and produced for all of Syreeta's albums with Motown including - "Stevie Wonder presents Syreeta." "Universal Sound Of The World" is rare gem from the 1974 album that showcases Stevie's brilliant songwriting and producing and Syreeta's incredible vocals.

Sadly, Syreeta lost her battle with cancer and died in 2004 at the age of 58.

    May she rest in peace.

We're losing too many creative people far too soon.

  • By the way, Thank You, for The Universal Sound of The World, "Motown Connoisseur!" You are my Friend.

  • Jackie, I used to drive up to his home,& up to the gate, for years & blast his music. Out of respect,I won't say where that is. I don't know if many people knew of Syreeta. She is purely amazing. We're all connected. I believe this was the song playing when all the light beings/angels.etc., surrounded her in her processional, when she made the transition. I just, know it,can feel it,can see it,& hear it. Right?

  • @RealtorJohnnyL ive been a fan of stevie wonder since i was 7 i think and i i loved the albums he made with syreeta so sad shes not with us any more eh!!! never mind her music lives on!!!

  • @RealtorJohnnyL I love Syreeta & Stevie & both of them are so,so present in this album, esp. this song. It's truly incredible & more so now,to know that I have others who share this awesome celebration of sound,rhythm...of life with. I originally bought it because of Stevie, but the bonus was;they both totally got(as in "I got it") each other & that "marriage"= ECSTACY. Thank you for the Universal Sound of the World. Your kiss is sooo sweet. You are my dear Friend.

  • @jackiemaree1 Mine too,Jackiemaree1. I just found this tonight. I have the album in some box. I just played it for the first time in years,on this YT video. I got the same chills & every other experience imaginable, that I got in,I guess '72 or '73. I played it,& other songs from this album over & over & over & just now, I could remember, no re- live, newly, my entire life in that moment & even the person who I shared that song w/ & danced to it with, the most,it was like making love,& still is.
