Recorded on February 15, 2008, this barn owl is 3 days old and being raised for our education department. So far, 6 out of 8 fertile eggs have hatched. The baby is eating lean rat meat, with some vitamin water, and calcium added. Thanks to our volunteer Stephanie who made this video possible!

  • We named her Athena mostly because of Clash of the Titans, I'm sorry to say. We are a bunch of dorks around here. I like the name Morpheus as well. Not that you can sleep and dream with an imprinted barn owl in the room.

  • Do you keep them in isolation?

  • It depends on the bird. This little fellow grew up to become an education bird and was offered lots of interaction with the human world so he would not be afraid of being in public. However, the ones intended for the release program have almost no human contact, as need them to stay wary of people. They are not individually isolated, though. They often still hang out with their siblings right up to release day.

  • This little guy is from Athena and Sonar. We are raising some of their chicks for education, the rest will be released. We feed them what they are ready for. They get lean rat meat the first 5 days, with water and calcium added. Then the get ground up skinned rat. Finally, at ten days, they get cut up rat or mice. Mouse is easier to cut up frankly.

  • who cares?

  • i'm so glad the rat meat is lean. is it also organic?

  • I am currently raising a barn owl chick at work. It is strange that I named our adult owls, Athena and Morpheus when we got them. Unfortunately the chick will be going to our sister zoo to be trained and used, so I am making the most of it while I can. It is about three week now and very noisy and very cute...

  • Where are the parents?

    Why not chopped whole rat?

    Thanks.
