Since I don't know anything about CAD, this made no sense to me. I'm gonna have to watch a whole butt-load of videos about layers before I really grok this.

If I was Google I would have called "Layers" something different so as not to confuse it with the common usage of the term (in programs like Photoshop). Sketch Up layers act almost like an "element" of the drawing more than an actual "layer".
I will say that this is a powerful little program and the only 3D program I have ever been able to jump right into and start using in a matter of days. Very impressive!
