True. But there is a difference. One takes us out to dinner, tells us how nice we look and then slips us a roofie. The other jumps us in an alley and leaves us for dead.

i think things are different now than they used to be, with the internet and how easy it is to get information, and especially how hard it is to hide things(just ask mitt romney) the age of the crooked politician lying about everything and slandering his opponent with lies is done. This is becoming a gigantic, fundamental problem for the republicans right now b/c they dont take it seeriously. 2010 was the last year politicians were able to get away with their blatant lies. things have changed...

My US History teacher described what you were talking about as a pendulum. The country would go left but then the pendulum would inevitably swing back.

I agree, there is a pattern. Thank you for the illuminating video. Campaign finance reform is the only way we can take back our government.

I do by and large agree with this shift that professor rich observes, but I have one thing to say - which is a gradual shift towards the right as far as fiscal is concerned and towards the left as far as social issues are concerned. If I go by that observation, the effect of big money in politics is not here to cease!!

Money in politics changes this equation. Now that corporations/the wealthy can practically buy elections, popular movements will have less of an impact. Unless campaign finance reform happens the U.S. will continue on the center-right path. Obama is not a real change to this. He's similar to the centrist blips of the past, and we've stayed in that Republican era since 1968.

I think 2008 will be seen as a critical election if Obama gets a second term. I would also include '92 as a critical election because the New England states went Democratic when it was previously Republican.

This video, and other musing thinking about this, but I read a newish book, 'The Lost Majority' which makes a powerful case that realignments don't exist and thinking they do helps us make bad mistakes. The very fact any state or place can go to either party means there is no clear dominance of either parities.

This was essentially my plan for voting before I knew ANYTHING about politics as an "independent" give the dems. 8 years to fix any problems then give the reps. 8 to make sure they didn't go to far and adjust as needed. That way we'd stay on a fairly centrist progression, whatever that means.
