Drunken drivers may have keys but they can't always drive, thanks to technology that is used throughout the country.

Ignition interlock devices keep drivers from starting their cars if they fail a breath test after humming into a sensor in the dashboard for several seconds, said Robyn Robertson, president of the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, a Canada-based group that studies the effectiveness of interlock technology.

If the level of alcohol on the driver's breath is too high, the car will not start, Robertson said.

"Research shows a majority of people who have their license revoked continue to drive anyway," she said. "While the interlock is installed in the vehicle, there is a strong reduction in the rate of recidivism."
