On June 21, 1973 President Richard Nixon and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev signed two agreements: "The Scientific and Technical Cooperation in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy" and "The Basic Principles of Negotiations on the Further Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms."

Great clip. Nixon was a cold warrior, but came to believe in stability and the status quo between the superpowers. He was no Reagan, advocated for freedom in the USSR, Nixon was a realist who felt simply matching/checking Soviet power was enough. Which probably was a good philosophy, given how badly things went for Russia in the 1990s.

Maaaan, look at Viktor Suhadrev (a great man, btw!), Brezhnev's interpreter standing right between the two leaders. One can only imagine just how alert he probably was. I can actually feel his anxiety!
