Owing money in America, is not a crime. Debtors prisons were abolished in the US in the 19th century. And yet these days, people are routinely being thrown into prison for failing to pay debts. And some people seem to be on board. Enforcement varies from state to state, county to county, and there are no national statistics on how many people are locked up for this reason. Which makes you think something is fishy. That debt collectors are using law enforcement as their own tool. But during a recession, what does that mean when poverty becomes criminalized? Alyona talks to Deborah Poplawski who was thrown into jail over a 250 dollar credit debt and asks her if she could have ever imagined that happening over that amount of money.

  • ...and when you get out of prison, you "find" the person who imprisoned you. And THEN you go to prison justifiably.

  • I live in Lakewood CO in a duplex owned by my family, my mom lives in the unit next door and we have a connecting inner door. One day she knocked and said the police are here arresting her, she had never been arrested in her life. If was for a late dentists bill. The two "cops" handcuffed her and came into the house and shined a flashlight in my face before they took her in for booking. She was released within 24 hours I hate these nazi pigs

  • Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you.

  • Why is the RT interviewer asking her why didn't she just pay it? The Banks who hand out the credit cards don't play fair and most Americans ARE IN DEBT through no fault of their own!! Ever hear of the STRAWMAN SCAM?

  • What an ass this guy is, going after the least of us to make money. Hopefully he will be sued so many times that he will end up in debt prison himself.

  • If she never received a summons then she can rightfully sue.
