The 1995/96 season saw a renaissance from Hearts after two seasons where they had flirted with relegation. This match was the pinnancle of the season especially as it came against a strong Rangers side who Hearts hadn't beaten at Ibrox since 1988. Given the fact that Hearts have only won once at Ibrox since it shows just what an achievement this was.

Hearts were not particularly fancied especially as they had just lost 2-1 to Celtic at Tynecastle the previous midweek.

This match would become the Alan Johnston show as his hat trick performance will go down as one of the most memorable in a maroon jersey.
