Love or Money 45 record by the Blackwells on the Jamie label. Same label as Duane Eddy. Fairly popular record in the SF Bay area 1960, didn't break top 100 nationwide. Blackwell's did a nice follow up version of "Unchained Melody." Yes, the video shows Allycool in the 1960 T-Bird filmed in 1961. Ally and his highschool buddy, Ed get together in 2008 and reminisce.

  • They were from Texas and moved to Cal. as farm workers. The group originally featured brothers DeWayne and Ronald Blackwell and their sister (Gloria?) who dropped out of the group. DeWayne and Ronald wrote very successful songs. DeWayne wrote "Mr. Blue", the Fleetwoods hit and "Friends in Low Places", the Garth Brooks smash. Ronald wrote one of Sam the Sham's hits - can't remember which though.

  • @Equity6 thanks Equity, sounds like you know your stuff. I have another Blackwell 45, unchained melody. Kinduv rough shape to put on You Tube.

  • Great song long forgotten. The Blackwells were a migrant fruit-picking family from California

  • @Equity6 Interesting trivia, how did you hear they were migrants? From Mexico?

  • Is this a phil spector recording?

  • @M3town3

No wall of sound here. Thanks for asking,

    Ally

  • The Blackwells played up here around Ukiah from the 50's-late 60's. My friends brother played drums with them, got to see them many times, even played a new years gig with Dewayne. Glenda was the sister , Ron wrote "Little Red Riding Hood" Unfortunately, he died in a car crash after a gig in the late 60's. Dewayne seems to doing well for himself.. what a story

  • @allycool62 No - not from Mexico. I read it on a liner note on a cd where the song is. Also on that cd is another great song - Lonely 16 by Janie Black from Pomona, CA.

  • spector definitely produced this song.one of his compilations lists the blackwells as artists he worked with. M3town3, you have a good ear!

  • But I "know" he produced that song in the early 60's on Jamie!
