I dont see why you are getting bent out of shape. All this information can be found on Wikipedia. The kids are John(master chief) and Sam (his best friend from training) I mean i don't think bungie is going to go tooo into depth about this stuff thats why there are books and infromative websites.

John is the Master Cheifs real name and Sam, the other child who was speaking was one of other two who John grew up with in Boot Camp. The other one was Kelly, a girl.
Sam died in one of the first battles with the Covies. He sacrifieced himself to blow up a covie ship after a Jackel punched a hole in his armor, rendering him unable to return to the human ship.
