This is a very simple, uncomplicated video I wanted to make when I was thinking of my late cat, Milo. It's simple and sweet and and easy to make. I just wanted to bring back something from my childhood.

"CONTROVERSY ANSWERS"
Here is a very intelligent and probably, to the best of my knowledge, accurate reply I found to a question on a yahoo answers page regarding the 'controversy' issue. I suggest you read it.

The Adventures of Milo and Otis (Koneko Monogatari) was filmed in Japan in 1986, well before computer animation could render us with the special effects we see in movies now.

It is unfortunate that a continuous spate of controversy haunts this film. It is not uncommon to come across completely unfounded claims that animals were tortured and even killed during the making of the film. However, there is no substantiated evidence to support these allegations.

A viewer commented that indeed, there are moments during 'The Adventures of Milo and Otis' when our favorite animal characters appear to be in potentially dangerous situations. Rather than being evidence of clear cruelty, it would be described as clever film-making. It is often remarkable to realize how effectively carefully-chosen camera angles, quick cuts, slow-motion and trained animals can be used to create the illusion of mortal peril.

A disclaimer at the closing credits proclaims that "the animals used were filmed under strict supervision with the utmost concern for their handling." Though some have affirmed that these titles explicitly avoid the use of the term "no animals were harmed during the making of this film," I venture that this phrase was never of customary-use until after 1989, the year of the film's US release.

Unfortunately, the American Humane Association has not issued an animal cruelty review for the film, (http://www.ahafilm.info/movies/movierati... which would have finally put an end to all the heated debate.

Contrary to what some have stated, director Masanori Hata was a respected zoologist who owned a private animal farm near Hokkaido. Also taking into account the large time-span over which 'Milo and Otis' was filmed (in many cases, Hata simply let his animal actors roam free and filmed their natural actions), it seems unlikely that such an animal-lover would allow any of his mammalian friends to come to harm.

American Humane says that "no animals were harmed" became the standard in 1996. It was used (among others) before that.

In 2000, American Humane filed a trademark application for -- and was ultimately granted -- exclusive use of the phrases No Animal Was Harmed® and No Animals Were Harmed®. No info there on the frequency of that end-credit before trademarking, however.
