Video shows a very rare view of a large, wild pregnant or newly-lacting coyote. She is also molting.

Although people don't like coyotes, they have it rough. This female had to survive the cold harsh winter. Then before she had a chance to increase her energy reserves, she became pregnant (necessary in spring). She had the additional energy demands of pregnancy, lactation, rearing cubs, and also is molting (which also takes a lot of energy). She has to rear her family and evade predators and human hunters.

This coyote had a lot to do - such as feed and protect her family. She likely did not feel good and may have been about to give birth.

I was standing in the open in front of her as she ran toward me. Not until she was quite close did she see me. Her behavior is interesting. If she had been feeling well, she would have been more cautious.

When she spotted me, she did not let on, but changed course. She never looked directly at me, but off to the side, until she was quite a distance away.

Some deer had been on the other side of the ridge. Later, I climbed to a place where I could see over the ridge and spotted them, but think they had been in the area when she was there. They might have had young also, which would be prey for the coyote. Possibly this is why one doe, let me come quite close - to protect her fawn.

Tripod -When I first saw the coyote, I had to find my camera. After a while, I found it, but was unable to photograph the initial pouncing the coyote did as it hunted. Then my camcorder ran out of tape and the coyote out of sight. I had to take the tripod attachment off the camera to reload the film. I thought the coyote was gone, but went outside with the camera. When I saw the coyote again, I froze in place so I wouldn't scare it off. After watching her for a while, I went back for the tripod and the camera attachment, but by the time I did all this, the coyote had disappeared again. Later, I went out with just the camera and found the coyote again, but again, froze in place because I was standing in the open in front of the coyote. Thus, the film is jumpy because I was unable to use a tripod.

(Hay measured about 10-17 in. tall. Some red-winged blackbirds swoop around (she is probably near some nests)

**Coyotes can run at speeds up to 43 mph and can jump over 4 meters. It runs with its tail down. Some coyotes found in the east can weight over 100 lbs (see http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:WN3D-Pm0RMAJ:icwdm.org/wildlife/coyotes....). Comments and videos show these monster coyotes, e.g. see the discussion under, "Coyote attack," at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT6sePYyeL0. (Some may be hybrids, such as of wolf and coyote.)

The coyote (Canis latrans) is also called the prairie wolf. It is a mammal belonging to the order carnivora and related to the domestic dog. They range from Panama through Canada. The name coyote came from Mexican Spanish. The Latin name means barking dog. Nineteen subspecies exist. Its fur is grayish-brown to yellowish-brown and can be black or white. It has a long bushy tail. The coyote is very vocal with a number of sounds including barks, yips, whines, growls, and howls.

Coyotes rarely attack humans (but the frequency is much less than attacks by domestic dogs) and the coyotes are often provoked. A published paper on the subject given on a government site can be found at:

  • Whoaa, cool! Is this all like, in your backyard? I wish I lived out in places like this. All we have are deer. :(

  • It is rare to see coyotes, but sometimes we are lucky.

  • Really nice shot of that deer at the end! Music goes well too -- Chabrier? Or Debussy? Your coyotes look larger than our desert ones.

  • Some of these are pretty large.
