@cotumarre She was also hot! She was the best female rock vocalist and the highest paid female singer in rock in the 70s and 80s and tickets to her shows went for premium prices. She did it all and she was awesome!
@cotumarre Yeah, she is kind of forgotten but she was a HUGE star and pretty much invented country music as it exists in its modern form. Her voice was enormous and she could do anything. And she was beautiful.
@Axgoodofdunemaul Hi, I'm not saying that Gilbert wasn't mocking some sacred Victorian cows - the peerage, the monarchy, the patronage system that put well-connected idiots in positions of authority, like Sir Joseph Porter in Pinafore and the Major-General in Pirates. But few Victorians would have understood the concept of "sexism", although Gilbert probably goes further even than most in his limited view of women - maidens or man-hunting dragons! Amazing he was happily married!!!!
@SweetBriarRose I understand you to mean that this wouldn't have been seen as subversive in its time, only comedic. I'm not a serious student of G&S, so thanks for the info. I shall do more research! G&S is so amazingly entertaining, even today. What an amazing cast in this production.
She was before my time, I mean I only knew one of her songs which was I don't Know much, I had no idea that Linda had done so many things. I am in awe with her now, after researching her career, I realize that these so called performers of today are just that, PERFORMERS. This woman is the real deal, she was the rock queen of the 70's, a very succesful Country singer, she did Broadway, she sang pop with plenty of sucess and to top it all, she has gold records singing Mexican Rancheras in Spanish
@Axgoodofdunemaul Gilbert wouldn't have dreamt of subverting sexism, or understood the concept!"Princess Ida" lampooned female education, and Sullivan tired of his treating mature women as figuresof fun - Ruth-or horrific- Katisha in Mikado.Kline and Routledge should not have been paired off in the Delacorte version, threw the finale off balance.Gilbert subverts expectations; cowardly police, unmilitary generals, aristocratic and soft-hearted pirates.Don't import 21st C values to 19C art!!!
Gives me goose bumps! I know what it is like to sing this high! You have to always make sure you are thinking about singing above the high notes so that they come out as clear as a bell! Also, you have to practice every day faithfully to keep your voice strong. You see, some singers are referred to as singing like an angel; so sweet and .. well you know what I mean? It isn't all that easy though. To be able to sing soft and sweet and then let it blast! I know big time what it's like. Powerful!
@blazak No they weren't! They were spoofing and lampooning the cheeseball culture of their era. Besides being damn good music and funny as hell, 'Penzance' undermines and subverts the whole Victorian culture of sexism, wealth, class, moral hypocracy and violence. Gilbert & Sullivan were revolutionaries. This operetta could be about the Republican Party today.
linda could have been a opera star and shes cute
