In Gounod's opera Philémon et Baucis, the gods Jupiter and Vulcan visit earth. In the aria 'Au bruit des lourds marteaux' Vulcan tells us that he is just as happy to stay in his forgery rather than to visit the gods on Olympus, who make fun of his dirty and somewhat deformed body. He is also aware that his wife Venus, the goddess of love, may be less than completely faithful to him. The aria is sung here by the great bass Fernando Corena, with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by James Walker, in a recording from 1956.

  • This aria is stylistically very close to some of Mephistopheles' music from the popular "Faust." Very enjoyable. It's a pity that the only complete recording in fairly good sound of Philemon et Baucis was deleted after just a short stay in the catalogue.

I like the contributor's imaginative use of visuals to accompany the excerpts he provides on the site.
