Amapola. Gerda and Ulrik Neumann, with Orchestra. Copenhagen, Denmark 1941.

Here they are playing Latin American music. Amapola a very famous rumba.

Gerda ( 1915-47 ) and Ulrik Neumann ( 1918-1995 ), was since late 1930'ies a very popular Danish siebling jazz duo all over Europe. 1938-39 they performed all over Europe, from Norway and Sweden in North to Bucharest in Romania in South. The outbreak of WW2 in 1939, and the following Iron Carpet, which seperated Eastern and Western Europe for decades, also seperated them from their Central and Eastern European audience. 1940, they really got their breakthrough in Denmark, and was very popular right away. They recorded several 78rpm's, took part in some Danish comedy movies and several Broadcast shows between 1940-46. Gerda Neumann was a vocalist and Ulrik Neumann was guitarist. 1943 the Danish jazz violinist Svend Asmussen joined them, and their jazz entertainment trio was very popular. On January 26th 1947, Gerda Neumann, her husband Jens Dennow and the American singer Grace Moore died in the plane crash in Copenhagen Airport on their way to Stockholm. Jens Dennow was the manager of Grace Moores Scandinavian tour. This tragedy was a big personal sorrow for Ulrik Neumann and Svend Asmussen. Ulrik was brother of Gerda Neumann, and Svend Asmussen was married to Jens Dennow's sister Anne Grethe Thomassen. A few years later Gerda Neumann was replaced by Alice Babs- the Swedish jazz vocalist, when Alice Babs, Ulrik Neumann and Svend Asmussen created the very popular jazz trio "Swe-Danes". Who doesn't remember their "Scandinavian Shuffle" from late 1950'ies?

My freind jurek46pink - please, take a look on his channal it's a good one- some days ago uploaded one of Gerda Neumann's best solo vocal recordings " Solnedgang" from 1940 with Otto Lington's Orchestra. This upload inspired me uploading this video. The 1940 recording "Solnedgang" must be found as " old danish tango" on his channel. It's also a very rare record to find to day! The style differences of these two recordings just shows the great talent of Gerda Neumann.

    and perfect musicianship into it.

    Two Amapolas on my channel
