Ida Chong First on HST Recall Hit List

Oak Bay - She's represented Oak Bay-Gordon Head for 14 years, but Ida Chong will spend the next two months with a target on her back.

The veteran liberal MLA is the first government member who may have to fight to hang onto her seat. In two weeks, anti-HST campaigners will start a recall campaign against her.

She's not the only island liberal. Murray Coell and Don McRae face recalls in January.

But will campaigners succeed? The timelines are tight -- and the same people behind the recalls already have already forced a referendum on the Harmonized Sales Tax; one the government says will be binding.

Plus, the anti-tax anger forced premier Gordon Campbell to quit.

Liberals say the recall campaigns are part of an NDP plot.

Last month /A\ News exclusively revealed the opposition New Democrats were quietly encouraging members to participate in campaigns even while leader Carole James said her party would have nothing to do with the process.
