Valid point indeed. It's sort of a self-enforcing circle, a larger military for defence, but a larger military also builds unrest and threatens defense unless said military keeps growing even more.

Of course my view is very biased as I'm from a country that has been at peace for 200 years and pretty much doesn't have a military capable of defending us, because we simply don't need one.

Sometimes it can be hard for people in superpower countries to understand that type of logic.

I agree. Although considering how much of our economy has been based on taking advantage of the resources of other countries, I think that TPTB think it's necessary to have a large military to keep anyone from invading since we have done such a good job of screwing other countries.
