D90's video is bad. The D3100 has the best video in the entry-level DSLR range.

You cant say bokeh on the camera is bad, it is the lens, not camera.

the noice is a firealarm with low battery. but i'm about to buy a d90 so i can film skateboarding, do you think it will do well with the moving images and can it autofocus while filming?

Wow the D90 is really bad at shooting video...
-
@MrTarff was on my mind the whole video too... lol

Thanks for the video comparison in the end, exactly what I wanted. The video quality of the D3100 is quite good, the sound bleh. The D90 obviously picks up the nice guitar bass, but the video quality doesn't seem nearly as crisp as D3100. Video quality is almost as important and photo quality to me thus I'll probably be going with the D3100, though I am going to have to buy an external sound recorder, as that sound is just crap.

Your smoke alarm is running out of battery which is what the beep is

Folks, d3100 + 50 1.8 + 70-300 VR= exceptional value and performance. D90? Great camera, atleast $300 more than d3001 new or used. 50 1.4? Over priced, overrated, atleast $300 more than 50 1.8 with little to no difference in performance at all. Bottom line save money for the lenses that are suitable for your style. with the extra $ you saved take a trip out of town and put your Kit to work. Happy shooting
Do you regret getting rid of the d3100 for the d90 yet? Im thinking about doing the same, how much did you get for your d3100? I see that you got your d90 for 600 from craigslist, ive seen some around that price too, im just scared that the camera will seem fine but once i have it for a bit longer it will mess up on me :/ So im thinking really hard about making the switch.

@MiiZzV I absolutely do not regret switching from the D3100 to D90. Photos are just much better. The focus on my D90 is much softer, and gives it a more professional look in my opinion. It suits my style of photography a lot better. Whenever I need to shoot video, I'm fortunate enough to have friends with Canon t3i's.

Without question the D90 is the better camera, but why would you change the camera body for a cheapo lense like the 50mm 1.8. Sure it is a decent lense for it's price but it has hideous bokeh and a really bad built quality.. it's nowhere nearly as good as the 50mm 1.4. If you don't wanna buy twice again save up another 200 bucks and go with the 1.4 you won't regret it.

@xath23 Thanks for the comment - At the time, I sold my D3100, and if I sold it and saved up a little longer to get the 50mm 1.4, then I wouldn't have a lens to put on the D90. I mean, I definitely could have borrowed a 18-55mm from my friends, but I shoot in really low light so the 18-55mm definitely would not cut it even close. However, the 50mm 1.4 is on my to-get-list in the future, maybe after getting a nice telephoto lens.
