This song was written to share Red Cloud's vision: a message of respect for the planet and for us as spiritual beings. The Red Cloud we speak of was a Métis person, born in 1917 in a tent on a moose hunt in northern Alberta, Canada. His other name was Ambrose Laboucane. He was a trapper in the Fort McMurray area of Alberta, served in World War II, escaped from a POW camp, became a boilermaker, had four wives and many children, was for a time the president of the Alberta Métis Society, and loved to play the fiddle. When he became a medicine man, he assumed the name given him by his grandfather. Red Cloud had many life-directing visions. One of the most significant resulted in the "Rebirth of Mother Earth" gatherings, events of celebration and self-discovery where he and others shared wisdom and thoughts on native spirituality. In January 1984, Red Cloud had a vision about the spiritual pollution destroying our lives and the planet. His message was to rid the world of spiritual pollution in order to heal Mother Earth and heal us all. Red Cloud foretold the time and place of his death. As predicted, he was liberated from his body at a Rebirth event in 1987. The group of friends who are "Valley Folk" hope to honour Red Cloud with this song. May his message of respect for the planet, and ourselves, live on.
