Film Description: Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. • Such a brilliant, original film. Berenice Bejo was wonderful!

  • In this scene she reminds me of Natalie Wood.

  • I love this movie and I was thrilled that it won Best Picture! :)

  • @hystria1 Maybe the ppl were laughing at the dialog that appears on the screen, which the real audience, "Us" didn't get to see like at 1:16. Just a stab in the dark there.

  • @hystria1 She came to fame with talkies, the movie within the movie apears mute because the movie (not the movie within the movie) is mute

  • @fromthesidelines I understand but still at about 1:05 you see that the mute movie in the theater doesn't show tabs yet the all spectators start laughing at some mute talk..

  • @hystria1 ???? LA PELÍCULA Q ESTÁN MIRANDO NO ES MUDA... PEPPY MILLER SE HIZO FAMOSA CON PELÍCULAS SONORAS.

  • Apparently, there was a moment in Peppy Miller's film {"Guardian Angel"} where this dialogue occured:

THE GIRL: "I'm sorry! Did I bump into you?"

THE MAN: "Oh, here, you dropped this."

THE GIRL: "Why, thank you! Of course, I'm not used to bumping into strange men whenever I find myself in a new town, so feel free to ignore me!".

    Cue audience laughter....

  • Keep in mind, 'hystria', that this is a silent film about people living in a world of sound. In the actual "golden" era of silent film, you had to IMAGINE what people were saying, and reacting to [other than keeping tabs on the intertitles that TOLD you what people were saying].

  • I don't get it.. the movie is mute.. why the theater is laughing ?

  • @gizirou13 masochisme?

  • At 0:46, my good friend is seated on the bottom right of the frame! :D
