Emory University archivist Ginger Cain explains to the Transforming Community Project pedagogy seminar how Emory students were the first to discover new material about the slave named Kitty while conducting research in MARBL. A touchstone in the lead-up to the Civil War, the legacy of Kitty and her owner Emory Board of Trustees President Bishop James O. Andrew is still discussed at Emory today.

For background on Kitty, Bishop Andrew and the divide in the Methodist Episcopal Church prior to the Civil War, visit http://www.emoryhistory.emory.edu/enigmas/Kitty.htm
