its recommend to use a harness yes to achieve de-power on the kite (plus arms would kill pretty quickly without it) if still over powered then the chicken loop release is what he do next and then he should be fine, as a last resort though he can completely disconnect himself from the kite using safety leash

jfreeze63137 youre totaly right haha but no one can handel that power we got a safety pull that makes the kite go down and powerless but i think this dude dind have lessons and expeiriance :P he aperantly ''forgot'' do pull his safety

Here is my question for the experienced kite surfers? Do you have to use a harness vs. just your arms. If so, would it be safer since you can just let go of the kite easily.

yep he actually released the kite and the leash before he hit the water or shoreline well past his kite!
