Last Night of the Proms 2009
Royal Albert Hall, 12 September 2009

Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano) and Alison Balsom (trumpet) perform Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away from Me", from the 1937 film Shall We Dance, in an arrangement by Barry Forgie commissioned by the BBC.

From the BBC website:

The melody was reused in the films final dance routine, but Gershwin thought the producers had thrown away one of his best numbers. Astaire and Rogers made amends in 1949 by having the song put into their final film together, The Barkleys of Broadway, and dancing impressively to it. By then it had long been a Gershwin standard, eventually taken up by stars from Billie Holiday to Robbie Williams. A simple sequence of introduction and melody with middle eight and coda, the two-minute song was ripe for extension. It always had orchestral trumpet responses, and in the 1950s Ella Fitzgerald recorded it with Louis Armstrong, but Barry Forgie who has himself arranged it several times before has planned something different again, a jazz treatment that takes tonights soloists where you may not have heard them go before.

  • wow! thanks for your express-uploading! i just wanted to see this so eagerly. this is an another sarah connolly again. what a versatility!

i've heard that she once wanted to be a Jazz-singer. as we can see, she has so much fun with the gershwin-number..

  • I read an interview where she said she used to do her own Gershwin arrangements, both for voice and piano. She also played with jazz musicians in her piano days. No wonder she looks and sounds so wonderfully at ease in this sort of thing!

  • Not really into the singer, but what an arrangement and beautiful trumpet performance! Don't get me wrong, the singer is allright. Just feels a little too "operatic" for my liking...

  • funny how everyone comments on the singing...the trumpet is the center piece!

  • Nicely done.

  • What a voice! I am a huge fan!!!

  • VERY CUTE!!!

  • @blueworldly I agree, but it's sure fun to hear her try.

  • I love her singing voice for opera but I don't think she's well suited for jazz.

  • @ITCJon LOL!

  • she does no good to jazz music.
