It has been 16 years since the last plane took off from the USS Midway, and 52 years since the last prop plane free-decked off her. That all changed today when Kirby Chambliss launched his Edge 540 off the USS Midway during a promotion for the Red Bull Air Race in San Diego, CA.

Actually I saw an E-1/S-2 do a prop take off on the Midway in 1983 or 84. I guess that was about 26 years ago. I would have liked to see the red bull plane take off too.
