I wish more bass teachers would emphasize this lesson. In fifteen years of playing drums in bands professionally, I had TWO bassists that would lock in with me, so I switched. This seems to be a lesson that a lot of bass teachers (or wannabe bass teachers) forget.

bass in 60 seconds? this video is 3 mins long! :p

When I play bass, I hear the snare more than the kick beat. I was taught to accent the 1st beat, but that coincides with the first snare hit. So my quieter strum/pluck of my bass has to coincide with bass/kick drum. I'm trying to fix that, but it doesn't come natural. It takes pure mechanical/discipline force, which quickly bores me....stop playing for awhile. Any tips?

One of my favourite things about playing bass is when I get one of those "ah ha" moments. I just had one of those watching this video. Thanks a ton, man.

Excellent advice! As a bassist and a former drummer, I think this is the most important bass playing advice you will ever find. When working on a new tune, I stand next to the drummer and watch his foot on the kick drum. If you do this and also listen closely, everybody will greatly appreciate it!
