Why is it that every Photoshop tutorial I go to, the video maker has some sort of sickness

When I try to use the second methoth and try layer via copy it says "Could not make a new layer from the selection because te selected area is empty" .

Can anybody help me?

You dont need to use the "Select-Colour Range". You can just use the magic-wand or marquee tool to select what part you want to lighten, and then do the "Colour-Blending"
