Britain led the World again! Scoffing aside, this wonderful machine was properly known as the Rolls-Royce Thrust Measuring Rig commonly known as "The Flying Bedstead". This research not only brought us the Harrier AV8A but also had a pub named after it.

    Actually, Rolls-Royce's preferred approach to VTOL was two completely separate sets of engines for vertical and horizontal flight -- the Pegasus vectored thrust engine was a project of the then-rival engine manufacturer Bristol Siddeley.
