The GRC is pleased to feature a video describing an entry in the first ever National Geothermal Student Competition.
Virginia Tech's Rio Grande Rift Geothermal Team, 'Very Thermal', consists of 18 undergraduate geoscience majors enrolled in the Senior Seminar course that is required for graduation by all geoscience majors at Virginia Tech. The course is communication-intensive, with oral and written assignments each week. Team Very Thermal is preparing a "white paper" and series of oral presentations that outline the various geological, technical, economic, societal and demographic issues that must be addressed in order to successfully develop the geothermal resources of the Rio Grande Rift region of the southwestern United States.

The competition is managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Program to help students develop skills and knowledge in geothermal energy.
Eleven intercollegiate teams entered the competition and each received $10,000 to conduct an assessment of the Rio Grande Rift geological province in southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico.
All the teams who entered the contest have been invited by the GRC to present posters describing their projects at the Poster Session of the Annual Meeting. It is hoped this special presentation will become a regular feature.
