MIAMI - A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., rescue crew medically evacuated an 88-year-old woman from a cruise ship 225 miles southwest of Miami at about 4 p.m., April 15, 2007.
The Coast Guard received a call at 10:42 a.m. today from the Miami-based, 963-foot, Royal Caribbean cruise ship Brilliance of the Seas, reporting that a woman on board had a possible broken leg and internal bleeding.
Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater immediately launched an H-60 Jayhawk helicopter and Coast Guard Air Station Miami launched an HU-25 Falcon jet to assist with the rescue. The rescue crews arrived on-scene at 3:48 p.m. and hoisted the injured woman safely into the helicopter.
The woman is being transferred to Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Her condition was listed as stable.
The U.S. Coast Guard has saved more than 590,000 lives since 1790.
