Mumbai slum redevelopment fuels fears

The Indian government has been trying to push forward a long-standing plan to re-develop Asia's largest slum into a multi-billion-dollar township.

Mumbai's Dharavi slum is a hub of industry and home to over 60,000 people.

Residents worry that the development of Dharavi might ravage their decades-old shops and eliminate their only source of income.

Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from Dharavi.

Yes. Why don't you clutter the place with about 1000 McDonald's and Starbucks while you're at it, so the yuppies feel comfortable. How are the folks going to make a living in their displacement shanties. If the government wants to develop, then where else is there to go? There are shanty houses and instead of that 50-100 Storey tower can be created providing house/workplace for 50-100 times more people plus with better sanitation. And please remember all arrangement has been done for their proper rehabilitation because such things are going on for years in India. India is having high GDP growth rate of 7.5-9% and we have to get rid of these slums from our Financial capital.

Mid rise apartments will he built and a whole new class of Middle and upper middle class will move in. India has been, is and will be so corrupt, the incentives for change are simply not present.
