Last summer I bought one of Cecil's personal motorcycles, a 1968 Triumph 650. It's pretty well restored to original condition, except it is strangely fast and has a five speed gearbox. My suspicion is this bike's motor was originally in a desert sled or flattracker. It will outrun my tuned up Thruxton 900.
I never met the man, but I have heard a lot about him. He must have been a dedicated biker.
This was a great race for me. I made the 1971 Program (from the race in 1970) with my picture at the 1:39 mark in your video. My 360 Husky would wheelie forever, and after doing a long 3rd gear one over the hump on every lap, the cameraman was ready for me at the finish line (the flag hit part is faked). I scoerd a 2nd place in the 500cc Novice class that day. Not bad for a 19 year old kid. My wife & kids loved seeing "Young Dad". Thanks for the memories and a great video.
Good stuff, especially the shots of the program. The ad for Cecil's Cycle Center brought back memories as I used to hand out there on occasion and even ran into Cecil Oswald at the Del Mar Mile back in the late 90's.
