Usually the "Gonzo" has an enlongated nose housing a radar system and is used for navigation training in the Canadian Forces. The Virtual Canadian Air Force uses the Dash-8 as its phase II multi-engine trainer to train its pilots in advanced aircraft systems, navigation and emergency proceedures before moving on to Phase III in a heavier aircraft. This Dash-8 is used by 19 Wing for 404 Maritime Patrol and Training Squadron. Pilots will then move on to the CP-140 Aurora for ASW, fisheries and shipping patrols and Search and Rescue work. Pilots showing dedication and great airmanship are then given the option of moving to 442 Search and Rescue Squadron for training in the CC-130 in advanced SAR techniques.
