A wise decision. In order to contain fundamentalist threats to its homeland (a brazen example of which was 26/11), India needs to invest in better technology in warfare systems. Good weapons choices indeed! Once NATO, US & UK start to retreat out of Afghanistan, Russia (in Chechnya), China (in Xinjiang), and India (in Kashmir) will have to be on their guard. Being 75% of the bRIC economies might help!

Why instead of buying this hardware instead try to feed those trillions of people they have and try to keep their goodies on their pants!

Military build up has to go hand in hand with economic build up...India must enhance its strategic reach in order to ensure sustainable growth & better standards of living for its people.

India seems to have ambitions far beyond its capabilities. With the poor living below poverty line they should spend bucks on them rather than getting planes. these fighter planes will become outdated in 10 years and they will again break a deal whilst the poor in the biggest slum will get more poorer.

Dont under estimate russian fighters, the SU30 is the among the best or best in the class. its just that russia dont do publicity stunts like the one you see in NAT GEO and Discovery. genrally all US media and HOLLYWOOD show off. JUST AS WE TAKE PRIDE IN DRINKING POISONOUS COLA RATHER THAN A PLANE APPLE JUICE. Its all marketing.

i wouldnt say russian aircraft is exactly horse-shit, its more than a match against whatever the chinese come up with. the main shortcoming of the iaf is its maintenance and quality control ie; it cant keep some planes airworthy, if it can solve this problem, im sure it will be able to put a good fight.
