I have to imagine that many of the parts he's done were written with him in mind. He often plays patriarchal characters and tells relatively long stories with a morale or with the intent of inspiring. He delivers these speeches so well - he's just the perfect advice-giver. CptMystery nailed it, I think it's Walken's pacing. Jim Morrison and Christopher Walken are the two people I could('ve) listen(ed) to read the phone book. and I guess JEJ too.

This scene helped me figure out what it is about Walken that I find so fascinating! He can start a scene with what seems like a completely obtuse even nonsensical statement. "You watch those nature documentaries on cable?"
I mean I was rofl when he pitched this line, but as the scene gains momentum he develops this seemingly random line into something poignant and meaningful...
He has a signature delivery, great pacing and tone. Fantastic actor...
