Steamboat Stomp -- Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers 1926
One of the most famous bands of the twenties and early thirties play Steamboat Stomp. These Morton recordings have been the musical basis of many of today's jazz musicians. Some stayed within this format, others evolved into swing and into the many facets of the modern jazz styles. But in general every serious jazz musician knows about these recordings and it is one of the reasons I have started my audio site especially to emphasize on the importance of these wonderful early jazz clips to the youtube and daily motion world.
Of course there were no films made in those times, however some photography was done which I include with these clips.
In 1999 I recorded this tune with my Vancouver Hot Five. Maybe you like it our way as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOiNYt_zLrA

  • Done with great affection! Thanks, man.

  • Jelly-Roll is great! Thank you.

  • He was really a big musician!

  • Air tight unit. Blows me away.

  • WELL SAID "erwigfilms"; spot on. Another favourite for me of Jelly's is 'The Chant'. What wonderful melodies, cross-beats and counter rhythms. A brilliant musician, no doubt about it, and fortunate are we to have his compositions and performances still so alive today.

  • @skimdit shut up asshole. a lot of music we have today hardcore or not has nothing to do with being miserable or tattooing yourselves. people like you sicken me. such an ignorant one sided view of things

  • Black music today stinks . So does White music Tatoo your selves to death you miserable little creeps .

I read Jellyroll Morton's biography ("Mr.Jellyroll" I believe was the title)

and thought at the time that someone should make a movie of this.
