Machiavelli is famously misquoted as having advised the Prince that it is better to be loved than feared. What he actually said was closer to, “People love as the will, but fear as they are made to fear.” This may come as news to you, but it’s a dictum whose veracity is not lost on princes - of that time or this.
Have you been hearing a lot lately about economic collapse, terror, dangers from without and perils from within?
They’ve bought you off once again – cheap – threatening all you love with idle fears, raising specters of ghosts and bogeymen.
This is Adam Doolittle, National Optimists Party candidate for vice-president. We’re better than they and you’re better than that.
