Women don't even bring up rape in America. Why do you think a nine year old girl would not be conditioned by that society?
It sounds like the real argument they are often making is that their morals are just as valid as yours whether you agree rape is wrong or not, because by western moral standards you have to respect their "cultural differences", which is all just a diversion to distract from the exploitative implications of that specific pro-religious applied logic.

Regarding the hijab; it may work but hiding women away both by this method and by keeping them from socialising with non-related men seems to me like hitting a tiny nail with a huge sledgehammer, which is to say a wholly out of proportion solution to what might happen. I hope that such matters can be revisited with more concern for personal freedom than for a worst case scenario.

He did not deserve it. He deserved to have his ideas slapped down because they are horrid, leaving no question as to why. He didnt deserve to be silenced.
