Ron Dante and Toni Wine of The Archies performing their #1 song from 1969, "Sugar, Sugar," on the New York City segment of the 2006 Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Ron Dante was the lead vocalist for the fictional group, and Toni Wine provided the female voices on this as well as several other Archies recordings. Ron and Toni are seen here performing live on the 2006 MDA Telethon; this segment aired in the New York area only, with Tony Orlando as master of ceremonies. (You can check out Ron's performance of "Johnny B. Goode" from the same segment at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88PHZyzlI3w .)

Since 1966, the MDA Telethon, hosted by Jerry Lewis, has taken place every year on Labor Day Weekend, with stations around the country carrying the broadcast; approximately 15-20 minutes of each hour consists of segments from the local stations, exclusive to their market areas. (See http://www.mdausa.org for more details.) The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon has raised millions of dollars for the fight against muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases.

"Sugar, Sugar" was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, and the single by The Archies, with Ron and Toni's cool vocals, became the Record of the Year for 1969. Visit http://www.rondante.com , http://www.toniwine.com , and http://www.tonyorlando.com .

  • Was this an Andy Kim song or a Ron Dante song?

Did Ron write it and Andy perform it or the other way around? Their voices are similar. The "Billboard Book of Number One Hits" credits this to Ron Dante.

  • "Sugar, Sugar" was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, with Jeff producing the track. Ron Dante and Toni Wine provided the vocals. Andy actually did record the song a few years later, under the name Baron Longfellow. Yes - when you hear those early recordings by Andy Kim and compare them with Ron Dante and The Archies, they do sound quite similar. For the longest time, I thought Andy was the voice of The Archies.

  • I wonder she owns any of her publishing? Chuck Berry sold about everything he owned and toured 150 gigs a year to survive.
